Digital Devil Saga: Manipura part one

So, Manipura. Cutscenes galore. The person with the long pink hair is actually a guy, by the way. You will learn to hate him.

Once the cutscenes are over, you'll be free to roam outside Manipura. There's a couple of Maribel to talk to, as well as Heat and Argilla.

Argilla: "We didn't come here to fight. We need to prove that to Jinana."
Heat: "She wants to see our skills? Great. I'll give her an up-close demonstration!"

When you're done roaming around outside, do not go in the closest entrance first. Instead, run all the way to the right and into a second entrance tucked away. In here you will find Revival Gem x 1. We will be revisiting this little area again in future.

Go back to the main entrance and run back left. There's nothing in the small room just before the big gates. Enter the Maribel's compound when you're ready.

To your left will be a door leading to a short corridor with a large karma terminal in it - the door at the other end of the corridor is locked. Back outside there's a Vendor and a small slope. Go up the slope and head on to the end. Take the second left and follow the corridor around. There's a locked door marked with 05 here; you can't do anything with it, but head around the corner to get Dis-Poison x 3. Head back up and take the first right (the left turn you skipped before).

Go straight on to the door at the very end. There's a yellow chest here that will give you Error Cell x 1. With all cells, wait until the solar noise is at Max before selling them - this will give you the highest sale price, and trust me, you're going to need it.

Go back outside and head up the stairs to your left. Go in the door at the end of the path and follow the corridor around to the exit.

When you leave the corridor, you will get a message saying that you hear voices whispering. You'll get this a lot during this base. It gets annoying.

Flick the switch for gate 01. When you go to enter it, the game will tell you that you can feel a presence beyond the door. (Demon senses sure are handy, huh?) However, when you go through the door, they scarper. Nowhere to go but on, so go down and around.

When you come to a choice between going up some stairs and continuing on, go up the stairs. (Unless you want to save and swing around on yourself, in which case stay downstairs and use the small karma terminal, then go back.) Once up the stairs, ignore the ladder to the right for now and continue on. Go in the furthest door and you will get a message saying a voice can be heard whispering - and what it whispers! Follow the corridor around to the left and you will be told that there's a presence outside. You'll be thrown into a fight with a Cockatrice, but it's just your standard Cockatrice so pound on it with ice spells. When the fight's over, open the yellow chest for Frigid Shot x 1. If you talk to the fat guy, he'll tell you that Jinana is waiting at gate #4. Go back inside and head left into a room with Brave Ration x 1.

Head back outside and into the other door before the ladder, and you'll see a blue wall. Destroy it and collect Wild Card x 1 and Quick Noise x 1 from the rooms here. There's also a yellow wall; ignore it.

When you're done, head outside and climb up the ladder. Follow the path around and climb down to collect Active Cell x 1 from the yellow chest. Then head back to the small karma terminal and head through gate 02. Make sure you're fully healed before you do so, though, because you'll be pounced on by four Preta and one Yaka.

Next: more Manipura.

Digital Devil Saga: Muladhara part four and a blue key interlude

Head back to Muladhara and make the trek down towards the strategy room. It's a good idea to talk to the random Embryon members scattered through here, as they almost all have useful information that you're not likely to get elsewhere.

Enter the strategy room and you'll get another cutscene. There are two dialogue choices here. The first one is unimportant - it only changes what Heat says next. The second one, however, is important. If you choose not to betray anyone, then Argilla will get a truly awesome skill in the second game - and with the way things pan out, it doesn't affect anything in this game. Once the cutscene is over, you're back in control in the strategy room.

Argilla: "I've made up my mind... If I let myself die, then I'll never be normal again."
Sera: "I'm alright. I... ...I just have a small headache. I just want us to be together... Please don't do anything dangerous."
Cielo: "If Sera had not been here, Gale would have devoured me. If doing this helps Sera too, then I do not mind."
Gale: "Angel... The name sounds familiar, but it should not... This is weighing a great deal on my mind."
Heat: "Hold on, Sera. We'll make sure you regain your memories, too."

Talk to the Embryon members again - some of them have useful new info. The Vendor has some new stuff, too - you can now buy Charge Shot from ammo for 1500 Macca, and the following from normal items:

Dis-Ache: 200
Dis-Mute: 150
Dis-Curse: 200
Molotov: 500
Ice Blast: 500
Thunder Rod: 500
Sonic Stone: 500
Land Mine: 500

Molotov through Land Mine do light fire, ice, elec, force and earth damage to all enemies respectively - basically Mabufu, Maragi, Mazio, Mazan and Matera in item form.

Once you're done talking to people and buying whatever you want, go outside.

Argilla: "Now that I think about it, everyone has been acting strangely since receiving Atma."
Heat: "Gale's a bastard, making us go through all that..."

Head for the exit, but don't go to Manipura (the Maribel's base) just yet. Instead, we're going to collect something from Svadhistana. When you get to Svadhistana, the guy closest to you will tell you that Harley left something important in his room before he fell. That's what we're after. Other ex-Vanguards will tell you that rookies are encroaching on the territory, so you'll still have to fight your way there.

Argilla: "Why are we here, of all places? Serph, try to keep our battles to a minimum."
Heat: "These newbies have guts. I like that in a meal."

Make your way through the Vanguards' Base until you get back to the room in which you fought Hayagriva. There'll be a guy standing there; talk to him, and he'll give you a blue key. The blue key allows you to destroy blue walls.

There's one in this base, so head there first. The quickest way to do this is to use the small karma terminal to teleport back to the large karma terminal and making your way upstairs from there. Once you've destroyed the blue wall, follow it around and collect Vital Noise x 1 and Power Noise x 1 from the chests on a balcony overlooking the room in which you fought the ghouls. FYI, noises raise stats, and the two that are the most pain to get hold of are Power Noises and Quick Noises.

By the time you're done in Svadhistana, Argilla should have learned her mantra and start being able to do some serious damage. Get her the Dragon mantra so she can learn Void Force.

There's another blue wall in Muladhara, so head back there. Once the blue wall is destroyed, get on the elevator and head down and onwards. You'll end up outside overlooking three yellow chests - you won't be able to get to them until near the end of the game, though, so don't worry about them for now. Instead, head across the not-bridge thing and through the door. There will be a door ahead and another blue wall to your left. Destroy the blue wall and get on the elevator. This will lead you to a dead end containing a chest with Great Chakra x 1 in it.

After you've got the Great Chakra, head back down on the elevator and through the door to your right. You'll be in another corridor.

First door left (down some stairs): locked from the other side. Ignore it.
First door right: nothing
Second door right: MP Noise x 2
Third door right: HP Noise x 2

There's nothing else to do for the moment, so head back to the surface and on to Manipura.

Digital Devil Saga: Muladhara part four and the Karma Temple

Back in Muladhara, you can chat to the members of the Embryon who are wandering around (and who have new stuff to say since you defeated Harley), or you can just skip to the elevator. Get on and you'll trigger another set of cutscenes.

Once the cutscenes are over, you'll be back in the strategy room.

Gale: "Do not question orders from the Karma Temple. Serph, you must go to the Temple. It may shed light on who Sera is, or what is going on."
Cielo: "As long as the girl remains with us, we will not have to worry about devouring our own Tribe."
Sera: "I'm sorry... I really don't remember anything..."
Argilla: "They summoned every leader...? That isn't normal."
Argilla (outside): "Heat and I don't... sound the same. Heat is far harsher than before. I wonder how different I seem to him... Haven't I always talked like this?"
Heat: "Sera... Her name is... Sera."
Heat (outside): "How dare they call us up like this... At least they can fill us in about Sera. ...They do manage the entire Junkyard. They'd better not tell us that they don't know anything!"

Next stop: the Karma Temple. Leave Muladhara and select Sahasrara from the menu options.

The one interesting thing in the first area is the cat to the left hand side. If you try talking to it, you get a message saying, "It's that animal. It peers at you through deep, silver eyes." And Argilla will say, "What is this?" about it.

In the next section, Heat will continue his semi-creepy phase by saying, "There's food all around us." Nothing else to do here, apart from talk to a couple of people. Enter the Karma Temple and you can save or go straight ahead. Talk to whoever you like - no one will attack you here (yet).

Get on the platform to continue, and talk to the Karma Temple guard to go through a fairly long cutscene with the remaining Tribe leaders. There's a dialogue choice, but it doesn't matter - it doesn't affect anything, and the response is the same no matter what you choose. Once the cutscene is over, you can inspect the terminal to get some (largely useless) information from the Dissemination Machine, or just turn around and leave.

When you get near the large terminal at the entrance to the temple, you'll be pounced on by a member of the Embryon, who will tell you that you can now download Mantras from the terminal. (The guy who pounces on you has some useful further information about hunt skills and their purpose if you talk to him again.) Heat and Serph should need new ones by this point - get Heat working on Physical mantras, and get Serph the Fire Spirit mantra so he can cover his weakness without having to rely on Heat's pitiful MP supply. Leave the Temple.

Argilla: "Something happened, didn't it? Heat, we need to get back to headquarters."
Heat: "Just returning to headquarters without asking anything? Hey, what's the deal?"

Digital Devil Saga: Svadhistana part two

On leaving the battle room, you'll be in a corridor with another set of stairs and a door at the end.

A presence can be felt beyond the door. Choose to enter and you'll see Harley, who will scream like the little girl he is and tell a croney to raise a wall between you and him. (Why doesn't Muladhara have handy defences like that?) You now can't do anything in that room, so leave and go up the stairs.

You'll be in another corridor with two doors at either end. The door behind you leads onto a balcony overlooking the room you fought the Ghouls in earlier, but has not items. If you go in the door in front of you, you'll see the guy who raised the wall. Run across the wall towards him and you'll end up in a fight with a giant chicken which is apparently supposed to be a Cockatrice. It's weak to guns and ice, so you can either have someone revert to human form and shoot it or keep having Serph cast Bufu. It should go down pretty quickly.

Once the giant chicken is down, hit the switch to lower the wall and climb down the ladder. Go through the door.

You'll be in another corridor, with a bend just ahead. Once around the bend, you'll see a large room with tables, a stairway going down, a small karma terminal and a green glowing terminal which is a life terminal, where you can pay to replenish your HP and MP and heal any ailments you may have.

Go down the stairs. You'll see a red wall ahead of you, which you can't do anything about yet. Go to the right and you'll see a yellow wall ahead of you - ignore it, again. Turn left again and you'll see a set of stairs going up - they lead to a corridor, which leads to an outside area. You won't be attacked here. Go forward and down the small steps, then to the right and up onto a platform to get Soma Drop x 1. There's nothing else here, so go back to the room with the small karma terminal.

Go further down the room and you'll be ambushed by two women just after the bend, who'll turn into Empusas. The ensuing battle is another semi-tutorial.

Head on to the door the Empusas were blocking. When you attempt to enter, you'll get a message stating that there's a familiar presence on the other side of the door. When you enter, Harley runs away from you again to a door on the right.

Here is where you get into a bit of a cat and mouse game with him. Follow him, and when you find Harley again he'll tell you that he'll give you his territory if you'll just leave him alone (yeah, right) and runs off to the left. Follow him again and go straight on to find him in the first room you came to, where he'll run off through the same door as before. It's pretty obvious if you keep that up you'll just keep going in circles, so Heat says: "Try something new. Block the path and drive him into a dead end."

Good idea! So turn around and go back the way you came, but this time go left instead of straight on, and up the stairs you'll eventually come to. Once up the stairs, turn around and follow the corridor behind you until you come to a door which leads onto a balcony. There's a yellow glowing chest-thingy here with Charge Shot inside.

Once you've got the Charge Shot, turn around and head to the other end of the corridor. Enter the door and cross over the top of the wall to flick the switch. This will lower one wall and raise another on the opposite side, just as Harley runs into the room and panics as he sees the walls moving. Harley will run into the newly-revealed door, which leaves you to follow him. Head back downstairs and through the door.

The route from here is straightforward and has no items to collect, so follow along until you come to a room where Harley will spot you and run into one final room. Run along the right hand side of the room and you will pass a ladder on your left. Climb down it and into a contained area with three purple chests containing Revival Gem x 1, Chakra Drop x 1 and Ice Blast x 1. Climb back up the ladder and use the life and small karma terminals nearby before heading down to face Harley.

NB. If Heat hasn't learned his mantra by now, keep wandering in circles nomming the random battles until he does, because you'll need Void Fire in this next fight to make sure Hayagriva doesn't crucify you by hammering Serph's weakness.

Enter the door for a cutscene. Note Heat's eye change.
Boss battle: Asura Hayagriva
Skills: Skewer (fire attack)
Drops: Soma Drop x 1

Yes, you are now fighting a weird-looking zebra. He's weak to fire, though, so have Serph cast Bufu while Heat casts Void Fire.

Eventually, he'll start using Void Ice, but this will waste his one turn so pound on him with physical attacks until he gives in. Shouldn't take too long; he's only go around 500-600 HP.
There will be another cutscene after Harley goes down, and then you'll find yourself outside Svadhistana. There will now be random Vanguards wandering around talking to you instead of attacking, because apparently since you killed their boss, you're the boss. Junkyard law.

Argilla: "Get back... to the base."
Heat: "What an annoying woman. Well, if she changes her mind, I'll just grab that guy over there."

Next: Muladhara, again.

Digital Devil Saga: Svadhistana part one

On entering Svadhistana, you get another short cutscene. No guards, eh?

If you go up to Argilla and run down the wall, you'll find a purple chest with Soma Drop x 1.

Argilla: "They are entirely vulnerable. What happened to the Vanguards?"
Heat: "They fear us."
-> Why?
"We will find out soon."
-> What is fear?
"Just look around. It cannot be explained."

If you turn around and go back on yourself, you'll find the Vanguards' Vendor and the exit. But leaving now would be no fun, eh? Enter Svadhistana.

If you use the Large Karma Terminal (which is definitely recommended - it will allow you to teleport back near the entrance from any of the small terminals scattered throughout the base), you can select the Restore option and pay 9 Macca to heal the damage from the hunger. 1 HP costs 1 Macca to heal. 1 MP costs 3 Macca to heal. Ailments vary.

Apart from the terminal, there's nothing in this room. You won't be attacked by anything for a while, so move on.

In the next room, going up the stairs onto the platform nets you Panacea x 2.

The room after that has a wall in front of you, a door on the right and a switch to your left. Go through the door and you'll come to a corridor with a door at the end with some stairs before that. The door leads to a storage room with Ration x 3 in it.

The stairs lead to a hall with a blue wall at one end and a door at the other. You can't do anything with the blue wall, so go through the door and you will be able to run across the top of the wall to get Chakra Drop x 3 from the balcony opposite.

When you're done, go back and flip the switch to lower the wall. This will reveal another door. Go through it.

In the next room, there will be another platform and a glowy red thing that is a small karma terminal. Save if you want to, or teleport back to the large karma terminal near the beginning. If you run under the platform you can grab a Revival Bead x 1. Running up onto the platform nets you Chakra Drop x 3.

When you're done, go to the door at the far end. You'll get a message saying that sounds can be heard from inside the room. Click "Yes" to open the door and carry on.

You'll get a cutscene which explains a few more things. Note when Harvey and Argilla's eyes change! That's important! Once the scene's over, you'll be chucked into a tutorial battle with two Ghouls.

No matter whether you're playing the game for the first time or replaying on a new save, the skills each character has equipped will be the same: Bufu and Void Ice for Serph, Venom Claw and Mad Rush for Heat, and Dia, Patra and Analyze for Argilla. Serph should level up when the fight's over.
Serph
St: 4, Vi: 4, Ma: 3, Ag: 4, Lu: 3
Skills: Bufu, Void Ice
Strong: Ice (Bufu)
Weak: Fire (Agi)

Heat
St: 5, Vi: 5, Ma: 2, Ag: 3, Lu: 3
Skills: Venom Claw, Mad Rush
Strong: Fire (Agi)
Weak: Ice (Bufu)

Argilla
St: 3, Vi: 4, Ma: 4, Ag: 3, Lu: 4
Skills: Dia, Patra, Analyze
Strong: Earth (Tera)
Weak: Force (Zan)
At the end of the fight you get another short cutscene, and then a message saying that Serph and Heat regained some HP because they devoured the fallen enemies.

Argilla: "Let us find Harley, Serph. Perhaps he can explain this strange power..."
Heat: "I can remember it in a vague sense. Sweet fluid dripping from a torn throat... splattering as I sink my teeth into rich flesh... This is a good sensation."

No matter how creepy Heat is at this point, I swear he's not all bad. ...Really.

There are no items here, so move on. From this point you will get into random battles occasionally and be able to access the menu.

Digital Devil Saga: Muladhara part three and Ground Zero

On the top layer of Muladhara, there's basically nothing apart from a few people to talk to. It is a good idea to talk to the random people you find - and talk to them repeatedly. Depending on where you are in the plot, what they have to say will change. Some of it is informative, some of it is odd, and some of it is just plain silly.

When you get to the exit and leave the area, a large selection screen will come up. You can choose between Muladhara, Ground Zero, and Svadhistana. Svadhistana is in blue because you've not been there yet.

Go to Ground Zero first. A message will pop up saying: "Serph and the party feel hungry... They grew weak from hunger." All this means is that Serph, Heat and Argilla have lost 3 HP from hunger - not worth using a ration on, even though since if you talk to the Member of the Embryon closest to you he will give you 5 Rations. There are a few more people you can talk to, as well, although none of them will give you more items. (BTW, the "feel weak from hunger" thing may happen throughout the game if you run around between areas often enough without fighting.)

Argilla: "Something happened here. I want to know what that was."
Heat: "Why was that woman here? Is she related to this marking?"

When you're done, leave Ground Zero and go to Svadhistana.

(PS: Ground Zero will disappear from the list of areas you can visit later in the game.)

Digital Devil Saga: Muladhara part two

When you leave the first map, you will suddenly find yourself without control over the camera. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can get annoying.

If you go straight across from the stairs where you come out, you can enter another hallway section with two rooms on the left, two on the right, and one glowy blue wall ahead of you. Don't worry about that; you can't do anything with it yet.

First door left: nothing
First door right: Chakra Drop x 3
Second door left: Dis-Poison x 2
Second door right: Soma Drop x 1

Go back outside.

Argilla: "Muladhara is Embryon's territory. It is the smallest area, sandwiched between the Vanguards' and Maribel's sectors."
Heat: "Let them keep watch. We need to confirm information."

Which would be why the grey uniforms all have a big slash of orange paint on them somewhere. Like Heat's cloak, which appears to have a target on the back of it.

To the right you will see yet another purple glowy chest-thing, but you won't be able to get at that for a while so don't worry about it.

When you're done, get on the elevator.

Digital Devil Saga: Muladhara part one

DDS opens with several cutscenes that will leave you confused and wondering if the voice acting is going to be that bad all the way through. I can assure you that it won't be. For the most part.

When you finally take control, leave the command room. You'll be in a hallway with three rooms on the left and two on the right, plus three random people you can talk to.

First door left: Sera, sleeping.
First door right: Revival Bead x 1
Second door left: nothing

Entering the Vendor (second door on the right) will trigger a cutscene not entirely unlike a similar scene in the Matrix. But much cooler, because Serph is not Keanu Reeves.

At the moment, there's not much in the Vendor's stock. The items listed are as follows:

Ration: 100
Revival Bead: 500
Dis-poison: 200
Dis-stun: 100
Panacea: 150

As for ammo, there's only the Shot Shell for 800. Don't bother getting it - if you're relying on ammo to get you through in this game, you're going to die pretty quickly.

If you click on sell items, you'll note that you have 10 rations and 1 revival bead (assuming you took the revival bead from the purple glowy chest-thing earlier.) The rations will sell for 25 Macca, and the revival bead will sell for 125 Macca. Basically, a quarter of what you'd buy them for.

If you enter the third room on the left, the Large Karma Terminal, you'll trigger another cutscene - this one with a familiar element if you happen to have played Nocturne previously. The only options that will be available for now are Save and Exit. Teleport and Restore will be greyed out, and another option will be added later.

The final door is the exit.
